I’ve seen so many tributes to him over the last week or so, but the one that got to me this morning was the HBO documentary King In The Wilderness. We all know of his many triumphs, but this one shows a side of King that I didn’t know. The loneliness and feelings of abandonment were particularly enlightening and humanizing. The moment that had me in tears though was when his dad looked at him in that casket at his funeral. I’m sure I saw that moment when I watched it live with the rest of America 50 years ago, but I was only 14 and couldn’t possibly understand the gravity of losing a child. At 64, with a son I Love, I internalized that moment and felt every ounce of the weight of grief that dropped this man to his knees. I’ve shed many tears over the loss of my King over the years. I have no doubt that I have shed more tears over Dr. King than any person in my life, but this morning was different. With this being the 50th anniversary of his death and feeling like there are so many who openly want to Make America White Again, the air was already heavy. When Martin Luther King Sr. saw his great son in that box, he let out a guttural sound so deep inside his soul, that it will echo inside my head forever. And I hope to never hear it again. Yes we lost our King, but he lost his son. I wish I had the words to express how much I Love this man, how much I appreciate him, and how much I respect him, but I don’t. I will tell you this though. Since I was 14 he’s been the number 1 person I look forward to meeting on the other side of those pearly gates. Thank you Martin. You were a bad brother. #mlk50
